Tonight’s LOST Recap – Happily Ever After

by Bay on April 7, 2010

If you are not caught up on Lost, cease and desist from reading this post as you will be spoiled!

Dang.  This episode pretty much exploded my alternate timeline theory that what we’ve been seeing in the ATL is what ultimately happens.  Instead it’s this trippy, slipping in and out of timelines mind-bender.  I’m not quite so sure how I feel about this episode, it was cool and reminiscent of “The Constant” and it was great to have a full Desmond-centric episode, but it also seemed so full of meaning that we will only really “get” at the end of the series.

No “previously on Lost” was good, it’s about time they stop showing that non-sense and just get right into the episode.  If you haven’t caught up, nothing will probably make sense to you any way :)   No obnoxious on screen V reminder was also a plus.

Last week I immediately thought I heard Keamy mention the island to Jin during his little speech in the freezer.  It’s been quite controversial that he did or didn’t say “island” but I think I’m in pretty good company with believing that he did.  Now we know that some Losties are “aware” of their island selves, I think this has a bit more credibility.

It was cool to see that ATL Desmond and Widmore get along so well; poor Des finally got his respect (and a little McCutcheon).  When Desmond is summoned to babysit Charlie it was great seeing them together…until Charlie does the creepy unthinkable and drives the car into the bay.  I got the chills when I realized we were getting a re-hash of Charlie’s death in the Looking Glass.  So it is near death/traumatic experiences that are giving our ATL Losties glimpses of their island lives?  Another tie-in with the whole losing consciousness = gaining enlightenment theory?)  The way Charlie was walking into oncoming traffic, maybe they can’t quite die in this not-quite-reality, just the way it is on the island for candidates.  (Randomosity: the bar where Charlie walks into after getting released from jail? “Jax”)

They lingered way too long on Desmond telling Charlie “there’s always a choice, brother.”  Was that some type of foreshadowing for the end of the episode?  The way Desmond is perfect calm wanting to go along with Widmore’s plan and then the way he goes along with Sayid makes me wonder what “choice” he will make.  I’m sure it is the good choice, since Desmond is pretty much the ultimate candidate, but you know I like to overly read into things and worry.  More about this in a sec.

It was nearly impossible to miss the painting of scales in Widmore’s office.  I can’t even keep track of little Easter eggs anymore though, when there’s so many huge things to think about…like, Eloise! and Faraday!

Eloise’s face when she sees Desmond is very telling.  You knew she knew something right at that moment, but it wasn’t until a couple minutes later that she gets all creepy the way she did seasons ago when she was telling Desmond that he can’t buy the ring.  What does she mean “you’re not ready yet?”  Because he sure does track Penny down double-quick.  I don’t like Eloise and her all-knowing ways. ;)

Finally, this episode is called “Happily Ever After”.  Please tell me that Desmond and Penny will ultimately be together and will finally be able to be happy?  I don’t know if any Lostie is as mercilessly tortured as poor Desmond and now he has to make some sort of huge “sacrifice”…I’m nervous for him.  I mentioned before that I’m nervous for this choice/sacrifice he has to make.  I’m hoping it is as ‘simple’ as having to throw some of the Losties under the bus (even die, ahem, Sayid?) to accomplish this greater good.

Some favorite quotes tonight:

At the MRI:  “You’re going to need the button” “Button??” “Panic button.” That gave me a little chuckle.  Poor Desmond, always fated to be pushing some kind of button :)

Charlie: “Why are you accosting a man in a dressing gown?”

If you are talking Lost on your blog, please leave me a link in the comments.  If you have any theories or thoughts to add, please do leave a comment!  I’m totally addicted to having Lost discussions…what am I going to do when this show’s over?? :P

-A quick PS for my husband (let’s see if he even reads this far ;) )  The whole episode I kept thinking that the limo driver, George, was familiar.  Marc says “definitely never seen him before”.  He is George Minkowski, the guy on the freighter who dies while trying to help Desmond find his constant.  Further evidence that I am always right.  Just kidding (kind of)

This episode was awesome and a precursor to how the end will play out.
You must watch flashes before your eyes(season3) first then watch the constant (season4) in that
Order, then watch happly ever after. Thinhs will make more sense.

Ok. Penny is desmonds constant. Desmond is daniels constant.
When desmond touched penny he traveled back to time line a.
So this time Desmond knows the differrence between the two timelines and understands
What he is supposed to do. All of the losties are each others constants!

How they end up converging -m not sure but I think that timeline b isn’t supposaed to be hence the bomb going off
Wasn’t what was supposed to happen. Now daniel knows it.

I ve got a lot more to say but gotta go back to work. Ill come back later with more

Very cool, I’d love to watch these in order like you say. I’ve always wondered why Desmond went on the sailboat race in the first place, remember how he totally blew Penny off in the stadium parking lot (after he sees Jack)…it makes sense if he knew at the time that he had to get to the island…Hmm! “We’re gonna have to watch that again” :)

I’m just ready for it to end and to figure out what the heck is going on?!?!?

I’m with you Mel! But I don’t want it to be over…what would I think about?? :)

I think this was a pivotal episode. I can’t wait til next week!

I love the enhanced versions – it might have actually proven what Keamy said. And he DID say it!

I blogged – maybe wrote too much but there was so much to cover, and so many questions!

Thanks for the link, just commented! Was there an enhanced version or did they stop doing that now with DWTS?

Ah! I thought George was familar too — thanks for clearing that up!

While I think love has a role to play in triggering the Losties “memories” or subconcious or whatever they are, I’m not conviced its the ultimate cause. After all, Charlie didn’t actually see Claire in the plane, he had a near death experience. And it is the mirroring of Charlie’s on-island death that reminds Desmond of Penny in the first place. Obviously, Penny’s pull is stronger, but it was not the trigger.

What I find most interesting about this whole senario now is how do we get from having flashes of an alternate reality to being back in that alternate reality? It seems by the end of the episode that Desmond is convinced his island life is better than his no-island life, but would you move from a reality where the island no longer exists to a reality where it does?

I didn’t even think of the role that love was playing in the triggering of the memories…It also seems to have something to do with the whole “constants” thing. Since Penny is Desmond’s constant, he gets zonked when he shakes her hand, but yeah that didn’t explain anything, lol. Because Desmond is Daniel’s constant and he already started becoming “aware” just by looking at Charlotte. Gee this is confusing.

I have no idea how they are going to pull in the different timelines, but a previous commenter mentioned watching the previous Desmond-centric episodes and perhaps that would shed some light on it? I think that maybe the Desmond we saw just meeting Jack (“see you in another life brotha”) and who disses Penny to go on Widmore’s yacht race already knows that he has to go to the island to fulfill destiny…Ok, I’ll quit now and go check out your post! :)

Great recap. With each episode I am even more Lost. I just don’t know how this will resolve in 6 more episodes. I want them to hurry up and help us figure it out already. Last night was pivotal but I still don’t get it – as far as the parallel universes out there for our Losties. And thanks for the clarity on the Limo driver, it was bugging me as I couldn’t remember who he was either. Desmond is central – and I guess has been since close to the beginning of all this.

thanks Colleen! It is totally confusing; I don’t know how they’re going to explain all the different “flashes’ in just a few episodes, but I don’t want it to hurry up and resolve! I want it to take a very, very long time :)

Eileen April 7, 2010 at 2:50 pm

You should check out Kristin’s recaps on E!, she has good theories, some of which have been validated by the writers. http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/index.html

She has a great take on this weeks episode, and also 2 weeks ago on the Richard-centric ep. Those two weeks do more for “explaining” the show to me than ever before.

I loved this episode — awesome!

I have a theory about the two timelines up on my blog… http://changingreflection.blogspot.com/2010/04/lost-happily-ever-after.html

Beth@Not a Bow in Sight April 7, 2010 at 8:24 pm

Jorge Garcia said in his podcast yesterday (Geronimo Jack’s Beard) that the script did not say Island…and he also asked the actor dude who plays Keamy what he said and he confirmed that he did not say Island. Dark UFO is wrong on this one…

Yep, like Beth said it has been confirmed that Keamy did NOT say Island. Both by Jorge Garcia & his girlfriend Beth @Geronimo Jack’s Beard (on Facebook) telling us the actual line in the script and by Kevin Durand (the actor that plays Keamy) emailing Beth & Jorge saying he did not say island. Not whether the Lost editors played with the playback to make it sound funny so we’d all misunderstand, that is another story. :)
