Tonight’s LOST Recap – What They Died For

by Bay on May 18, 2010

If you are not caught up on Lost, cease and desist from reading this post or you will be spoiled!

Well dear friends, this was our last episode.  Last regular episode before the big two and a half hour finale on Sunday.  Maybe it’s silly, but I’m really very sad about it!  There’s no other tv show that has me staying up late, watching it twice (I’ve already admitted to doing that, right?) and then writing about all its little mysteries.  So (tearing up) here is one of my last little recaps for ya!

Tonight’s episode was very well paced, nothing felt rushed and yet we got so much information.  Once again we see Jack’s neck bleeding, and we see Desmond meddling around a bit by telling Jack that his father’s casket has been found and is being returned to Los Angeles.  I’m not sure at all what purpose this will serve, but let me just jump around a bit here and say, I get the feeling that little David’s piano concert is going to be some type of awesome Lostie reunion that will close out the series.  Jack asks David if his mom will be there (I’m still thinking Juliet!), Desmond rounds up Kate and presumably Hurley & Sayid, we’ve already seen Dogen at the conservatory with his son, Pierre Chang, Charlotte and Miles will be there (Miles asked Sawyer to go with him, so Sawyer will probably be guilted into attendance), Daniel wants to see Charlotte again, Charlie wants to see Claire again and we can assume Claire will come along with Jack….ok you get the picture.  I’m very excited for this :)

Back to the episode, it was another “full circle” moment to see Jack sewing up Kate this time (remember she stitched up his back right after they first crashed?).  Don’t hate me for kind of hoping that Kate was going to die there.  She was pale, losing a lot of blood….I know, I’m brutal.  But wait, I change my mind a little about Kate later on…

Did we see Richard Alpert die?  Can’t be, they wouldn’t blow him off so nonchalantly, right?  You know he’s one of my favorites, so I’m hoping he’s just stuck up in a tree somewhere ;)   The deaths we really did see were Zoe & Widmore.  Zoe was a no-brainer, but Widmore’s is a bit more troubling.  Was Ben just taking his revenge for Alex’s death and that’s all?  Or do you think that he really wants to go kill “other people”?  I want to think that Ben was just after Widmore and that is all.  He’s too smart to believe Smocke’s silly promises like “you can have the island to yourself” (which later Smocke admits that he’s “going to destroy the island” so Ben should see through him immediately), I believe Ben is just manipulating Smocke the way he manipulated Locke.

How sweet was it to see Danielle?  I always felt like she and Ben could have had a little love connection, both of them being Alex’s parental figures.  It was really cute to see them together almost like a family in the ATL.

So was Jacob just a boy because Hurley had the rest of his ashes?  That seems more than a little silly.  When Jacob does have his full self back and he’s talking to his candidates, I thought it was such a powerful scene.  They all seem so stunned to finally be with Jacob, getting some answers and here is where I finally crack a little and sympathize with Kate.  When she asks why her name is crossed off the wall & Jacob says “because you became a mother.”  I got a little lump in my throat.  As Jacob explains to them, “none of you were doing just fine, you were all flawed.  You were like me, all alone, looking for something.”  So when Kate loved Aaron so completely, she was no longer a candidate.  I love it!

Jack steps up, predictably, and Sawyer gets one of his good lines in there:  “I thought that guy had a God complex before.”  And almost hysterically, Jack happens to have a cup in his backpack.  lol!  Did you not at least smirk at that?  Later on when I was reading the DarkUfo message boards I read the best comment ever:  “The real candidate always carries around a cup. Even if he has had to rescue it from the sinking submarine and zip tightly in his backpack.”  Hysterical!

So now Jack is the candidate, what do you think?  Do you think he fails and the island is destroyed?  After all, in the ATL, the island is underwater.  I have no real ideas on how the island battle plays out, but I am sure that Desmond is the key to it all.

I also thought the final scene (where we see Ana Lucia, yay!  And she’s kinda corrupt, which I like) was exciting and a cool set up for the finale.  Whatever Desmond’s plan is, I’m all over it!

As usual, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!  And if you blog about Lost, please leave me your link so I can come scope out your post.

Michele asked a question and I kind of wondered the same thing…why did Kate’s name get crossed out when she becamse a mother but not Sun’s? Did I miss something?
What happened with the Others? And the Darma crew? Why were they vital to the show?
Again…just ready for this whole thing to wrap up!
But in reference to last night…GO FLYERS!!!!

my 2 cents:

I’ve only had the chance to watch it once, so bear with me! Couple thoughts, not really in any order:

-Ben kills Widmore. What about when he & Widmore met in season…4?…and Ben told Widmore he couldn’t change the rules of the game? What are the rules? What is the game?

-I think Alpert is just moved. He can’t be killed, he said so himself. i thought it was just that he couldn’t die naturally, but he & Jack couldn’t be blown up by the TNT either. I think he’ll be back.

-Jacob is dead (dead is dead) but can be shown to people who he wants to see him. But what’s with Little Jacob existing in the same timeline as Big Jacob? I loved the “chalk on a wall” comment. I thought of it as a Darlton shoutout to the audience, too. Don’t read into everything so much, sometimes it’s just chalk on a wall. Or a DHARMA logo on a shark.

-Ben is the only one who’s had an ok life off the island in the ATL. He was underappreciated and a little bullied, but he’s made a difference in Alex’s life and kinda hit it off with rousseau. interesting.

Great recap! I am hoping that Richard isn’t dead, but we didn’t see Frank die definitively either. Ack!

I am having a hard time liking Sideways Locke. It’s hard for me to separate Fake Locke from Sideways Locke, I guess. I am liking the Sideways world more and more. I used to detest it because it seemed to negate the Island and all that happens there.

Ben was real wimpy there for awhile and I am glad to see him not so wimpy, but sad that he’s bad again.
