Ok, so I’m not even going to bother with the whole picture, spoiler warning, etc.
It is 1:35 in the morning, I technically can’t say “Tonight’s Lost” but since this is the last time I’m able to say it, I will
I’m going to wait and give an actual recap post when I have more time to think. This is really just my initial impressions.
I’m not going to say I was disgusted and disappointed in the ending of my favorite show, but I also can’t say that it lived up to my expectations and fulfilled my every wish. It is just very different from what I had believed we were going to have, that I’m kind of in a state of shock.
What I think we learned in tonight’s episode is that the ALT/ATL/Alternate Time Line was really an afterlife…ok, c’mon, PURGATORY that the characters had to work through after their deaths in order to move on to the other side. What doesn’t make sense to me is, what is the actual purpose of the island? We recently saw Michael on the island, and he led us to the reveal that the whispers are actually those that are stuck there and can’t move on. Why is it that Michael knows that he is dead, but is still stuck? Juliet died on the island and yet she was living in this alternate world, completely unaware until she connected with Sawyer. (Did that even make any sense?)
When did each of our Losties actually die? Now some of this is obvious, like Locke died in the hotel room after Ben strangled him (I did appreciate Ben’s apology to Locke outside of the church), Jack died in the bamboo field after suffering his MIB inflicted injuries, but what went on with Claire, Kate, Sawyer, etc.? Did the Ajira flight out of the island make it? The way Jack sees it fly overhead, it would seem to me that it made it, but we even see baby Aaron in the ATL, when did Aaron die? My head is about to explode.
I’m sure we are never going to be able to fully figure out a lot of the questions and mysteries of this show, but I’m hoping that given a bit of sleep and some more thought I can give you a true finale recap.
I’d love to hear your initial thoughts on whether you loved/hated this ending. I loved many parts, but ultimately this is what I wanted to see happen:
Our Losties, from Richard to Dharma-era to 815, were all brought to the island as candidates for the Jacob/MIB struggle over the “heart of the island” protection thing. When the fight comes down to Jack vs. MIB, Jack succeeds in destroying the island, while not killing MIB. All of the deaths, etc. are course corrected and flight 815 lands just as we saw it in the ATL, and our Losties come together in some type of big reunion (almost like what we had, but they’d be alive) where they became aware of their island past and connections, but were living happily in the present. Also flash to Richard growing old and living a normal life in modern society and MIB back in his body breathing in city air somewhere.
Ok, fantasy land over. Time for me to go to bed and return to the “reality” of our Lost ending tomorrow. We’ll talk more soon.

Well I’m sure you know I am MAD MAD MAD!!!! Could they have left more thing unanswered?!?!?!?!??!
Michele thinks that they all died on the plane and they were all ghosts running around the Island. And that’s why they met other “ghosts” like Juliette and Libbey and they all met in some after life before purgatory.
I think that the life on the Island was “real” and they all die eventually and end up in purgatory, or whatever is supposed to be.
So what happened to Michael and Walt, why was Walt so special? Where did the polar bear come from? Like you said, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE ISLAND?!?!? I could just go on but the I’m just so mad! Stupid show!

I like that there’s a lot left unanswered to thing about/keep open to interpretation. They definitely didn’t all die on the plane, I agree with your thoughts Mel.
The polar bear was part of the experiments that Dharma was working with about the unique properties of the island. I didn’t think the polar bear was still an issue at all
As for Walt, yes, I’d like to know why he was special. Obviously there’s so much that needs a rewatch!
The Point of the island was to provide the light of goodness into the world and keep evil from overrunning the world. This was explained a few episodes ago with Richard and Jacobs beach talk.
I feel like they provided enough info to answer most questions, even if they weren’t answered directly.

I understand the point of the island as far as the goodness/light goes, I don’t understand why some people are stuck there specifically and not in their own “ATL” a la Michael. Why are there so many people that are stuck there and creating the whispers that we hear, etc.?
I get the whole light/goodness protecting the world from evil purpose of the island. What I don’t understand is, like you said, when did they die? What was the point of Walt being special? I knew we would have unanswered questions (like what was the point of the time travel flashes, etc.). I know they’re dead – that was something I figured at one point – but when they died, why the alternate timeline, etc. – I just don’t get it. Gah.
Christian explained that some died before, some after. For instance, Hurley and Ben clearly ran the island for a long time. I don’t think it’s important to know exactly how and when all of them died.
And Christian also said the alternate timeline was a sort of purgatory they all made so they could find each other before moving on.

I am, to say, quite a bit angry right now. The producers/writers said a couple of years ago that they were not in pergatory/dead. What was that, a sin of omission? What a major copout. It was a great ending- for this season, but definitely not the other 5. That was nothing but red herrings. They took a great show and totally destroyed it.
They were not dead or in purgatory on the island. Purgatory/death was only in the flash sideways/alternate timeline. So they dint lie at all, since the comment was made before the alternate timeline even existed.

That’s why it was a sin of omission. They said it wasn’t the island, they weren’t in pergatory, and that they would never have it end so they were all dead. They did include it, that’s what the omission was. They also said, they knew how it was going to end from the very beginning, so they supposedly did know it.
Queenmotherblog, your the best, I love you, WHAT NOW?
You know I never watched “Lost”, but I love Marc’s comment lol!
