This month’s From Left to Write Book Club pick is “The Costume Trunk” by Bob Fuller. It was a little change of pace for the hectic month, as “Costume Trunk” is a children’s book! As soon as it came in the mail Rayna commandeered it and brought it right up to her bed, where she sleeps with as many books as she possibly can. At least she got her love of books from me
As you would guess, “The Costume Trunk” is about a costume trunk that magically transports a group of friends to “Paddywhack Lane”–a place where all their dreams come true. It’s funny, because I’ve never really thought of Rayna having a costume trunk until days before I received this book in the mail.
While we were at the shore house this last time, a couple of our friends volunteered to watch the kids so that we could actually go on a beach date (which is really rare for us, since we are almost always there by ourselves). They could see how few toys we had there (we bring a few toys down with us; there’s none in the house), and one of them asked “yeah well you have dress up costumes and stuff right?” Um…no? I realized that I don’t have any organized group of dress up toys at all.
Rayna has an excellent imagination (as you may recall, she is Woody almost every day) and she makes up crazy games and things all the time. But we really don’t have much dress up stuff. I don’t know why it never really occured to me! I need to get a little box and put some stuff in it, that seems like a great way for her to play around and be something other than Woody for once!
So now I’m on the prowl for some dress up dresses, hats, costumes, etc. I have her pirate costume from Halloween last year which will be a fun addition and she’s been asking for a set of wings
so I’ll look out for that too. What else would you include?
Disclosure: I was given a copy of this book for review purposes.

I’m glad my daughter isn’t the only one who sleeps with her favorite books.

I’d be happy to send you a costume trunk from The Dress Up Club (www.thedressupclub.com)…
Amy has great ideas in her post!

Sounds like Rayna is the perfect child for this sort of play.

I’m going to say go as girly as possible! Princess stuff, earings, necklaces, little high heels. Maybe buy the game Pretty Pretty Princess for pretty pretty Rayna!
I sure am hoping my granddaughter will play dress up with me! I’m so tired of being the secondary boy character to grandson, Tristan’s hero characters. Bring on the glitter!
Nice sharing. It looks like that you had a very good time reading books together with Rayna…

What a lovely story. It’s great when a book not only provides a good read but kindles the imagination of the child reading it. My daughter will love this book by the sounds of it.
