Giveaway! Vick’s Behind Ear Thermometer (& review)

by Bay on March 19, 2012

Welcome to Queen Mother Blog! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Recently Vick’s had a blogger event in Philadelphia to promote the new Vick’s Behind Ear Gentle Touch Thermometer.  I was excited to attend, 1. to get out of the house (childcare was provided! gasp!) and 2. because I am the world’s worst thermometer user.  I never seem to have an accurate thermometer in the house–I can think of at least 4 that I have gone through since Rayna was born…I don’t know what it is.  They either stop working, give unreliable readings, or I really can’t get them to work right (like Rayna won’t keep one under her tongue for more than 1 second).  So I was excited to see this one in action.

Then, the morning of the luncheon, both of my kids wake up with their eyes crusted shut.  I couldn’t believe it.  Sure, we have had some run-ins with pink eye this year, but both of them on the same day?  The day I actually want to go somewhere??  So naturally I spent the morning waiting on hold with my pediatrician, getting prescriptions called in, trying to pick up the not-ready prescriptions, etc. etc.  I obviously didn’t make it to the event.  Womp womp.

BUT, they were sweet enough to send me a thermometer for review, and have me host a giveaway here–yippee!  The thermometer couldn’t have come at a more convenient time for me to use, because guess what can easily happen to babies who have had pink eye?  They get an ear infection from the same bacteria.  Lovely.  So I was able to put this to the test right away.

There’s a quick start guide in the packaging that shows you how to use it, and in 30 seconds you’ll get the hang of it.  It’s SO easy, you just turn it on, it counts down 10 seconds to being ready and then you just touch the sensor behind the earlobe, press the button and BAM, instant reading.  You don’t have to wait and try to hold it there while your kid swats it away, it’s instantaneous.  And then the readings are color coded so you can quickly tell if your child (or you, obviously you can use this on anyone) has a fever.  Green = no fever, yellow = slight fever, red = yikes! fever.

Since I’ve just been using it the last few weeks I can’t say if it will withstand the brutal conditions of my house yet.  But, I know I don’t have the problems with it being hard to use or providing inaccurate results (like the temple scanner one I have which constantly reports a temp of about 82, really?).  But, Vick’s does provide a lifetime warranty under normal use, so that is good to know.  I think we finally have a winner & I don’t have to sound like a sap when I call the doctor and I’m “not sure” if my kid has a temperature.

So are you ready to win one?  Just post a comment here.  You can tell me if you’ve had success with thermometers in the past, why you’d like to try this one, etc.  If you’d like additional entries you can subscribe to my blog by feed or email, follow me on twitter and/or tweet about this giveaway (1x day).  Just be sure to post a different comment for each.   Giveaway will end on 3/29 at 8 PM EST, US addresses only.  Good luck!!

Disclosure:  I was sent this product for review.  I was not paid or obligated to write this post.  All opinions are my own.  Giveaway prize will be fulfilled directly from the company, not from me.

I’m due with a baby girl in a few weeks and this would be wonderful! I’ve tried temporal artery thermometers and they work ok but not great.

Valerie Taylor Mabrey March 28, 2012 at 10:37 pm

I have tried under the arm and mouth and they never are accurate

I have never used this kind of thermometer before, but it just has to be better than the alternative.

My son can never hold a thermometer long enough under his tongue to get a reading so this would be perfect for us! Thanks!

I don’t like oral thermometers, have tried the regular ear thermometer (it broke) and have tried the temporal. This i’d love to give a try to see how well it works.

I thought I was the only one that seems to be incapable of keeping a working thermometer around lol! It’s honestly good to know, that I’m not the only one out there with the same problem, this sure does look like a life saver!

I’ve had fairly good luck with traditional thermometers, but this seems so much easier. Thanks for the giveaway.

Krystalynn Hernandez March 29, 2012 at 10:05 am

I am not a fan of regular thermometers. I’ve been using a cheap forehead thermometer but I feel that it isn’t the most reliable!

We have a digital thermometer that we don’t have a lot of success with because baby doesn’t like to sit still long enough to get an accurate reading.

No, not much success. In fact even the one on the porch feel off the holder the other day! I used to break the ones with the mercury in them years ago all the time. I have the forehead one which half the time is useless and do I really trust it when it is different each time. I had the paper ones which were pretty cool but don;t have those anymore. I have a digital one that is eh… So I am ready to try something new that hopefully does it right!
