This month’s From Left to Write book club pick is Barbara Slate’s graphic novel “Getting Married and Other Mistakes.” It was my first time completing a graphic novel.
Completing, you ask? Well, I have started to read one other and it was so confusing I couldn’t figure it out. And I like to think I’m a smart person!
You might recall that I have a historical interest in the Borgia family (and no, I haven’t really watched the new Showtime series. I’ve watched bits here and there, but I sadly don’t have much time for tv shows of my own.) Because of my interest in the Borgias I once stumbled upon a series of graphic novels called “Cantarella” that looked interesting so I wish listed them on Paperback Swap.
When I finally got the first one in, it didn’t take long for me to figure out that any comic book experience I had in the past no longer applied here. It’s Japanese Manga I guess, so that must be why it was so different. I don’t really know what the differences are, but I just couldn’t get into it.
Then I’ve checked out The Walking Dead graphic novels because my Kindle was offering some for free. I thought since I loved the show I might want to start reading the “books”. Wrong. They were just like comic books and I felt like it was a waste of my time.
Getting Married and Other Mistakes was so quick to read, I actually finished it, hooray! It was cute, but I can’t say I see myself getting really into the genre. And it’s sad, because it would really give me more geek cred if I could!
What about you? Do you read graphic novels?
Disclosure: As a participant in this From Left to Write book club, I received a copy of “Getting Married and Other Mistakes” for review. Be sure to check out the other bloggers’ response posts on book club day!

Definitely not a graphic novel person. I tried to read one that was made into a movie a few years ago (Sin City) and I just could not get in to it.
I’ve never been much of a graphic novel person. I remember reading comic books when I was a kid and always wanted more! I’m a fast reader and needed something more in depth.
I was interested in seeing if a “graphic novel” was really different than a comic book. It’s not. I’m done. Give me a 500 page real novel that I can sink my teeth in to.
When I was a kid, my two favorite comic books were Spider Man and Archie. Now my two favorite on-line comics that you might want to check out are Girl Genius http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20021104 and The Order of the Stick http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html.
